Hang Tao is a distinguished professor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering and also serves as the Deans Assistant. He is responsible for the course Materials Physics, which has been recognized as a key undergraduate course in Shanghai, a full English model course for foreign students in Shanghai, a model course that integrates Party history education in Shanghai universities with the curriculum, and a high-quality reform course in Shanghai moral education. The course has also been selected as a model of excellent moral education courses among Chinese universities by Xinhua News Agency.

Professor Hang once won the first prize of the Personal Award and Teaching Design Innovation Award in the first National Higher Education Teacher Teaching Innovation Competition and the second prize in the second Shanghai Young Teachers Teaching Competition. He has also supervised student teams to win the Special Prize in the first China College Student New Materials Innovation Design Competition and the second prize in the Shanghai Advanced Materials Innovation and Creativity Competition for College Students. Professor Hang was honored with many prestigious awards, including the Jiahe Excellent Teaching Award, the Excellent Teaching Award, the KoGuan Top Ten Teachers Award, the Candlelight Award (first prize), the Excellent Teacher Award (first prize), the Excellent Guide Teacher Award for Summer Social Practice, the Most Popular Teacher Award in the School of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Outstanding Class Advisor Award.
