Top professors from the main universities of USA, Europe, Latin America and East Asia will invite during the whole academic year.

Since the opening of the Silk Road between the East and the West or Marco Polo’s trips to China in the XIIIth century, Asia and the West are closely connected via an economic and intercultural exchange. Their relations started long before the “era of globalization” but could since the beginning of all interaction be considered as a start for the creation of a global society and of the shaping of a world trans-culturally connected. This lecture series aims to trace and analyze the history of contacts, transfers and exchanges between Asia and the West and to point out differences as well as similarities in the development of a modern society. Socio-cultural aspects will be discussed as well as economic issues.

The lecture series brings scholars from Asia and the West together to discuss the differences between Chinese and western historiography as well as their major lacks and challenges. The conference aims to use a trans-national approach to explain how local history is connected into a more general framework.

It is organized by professor Manuel Perez Garcia and hosted by the Department of History, School of Humanities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Academic partners institutions and external collaborators will be the Global History Network in China (GHN) www.globalhistorynetwork.com whose founder director is professor Manuel Perez Garcia, GECEM project (European Research Council/European Commission Horizon 2020) whose director is prof. Manuel Perez Garcia www.gecem.eu and the University Pablo Olavide of Seville (Spain) as main European partner of this academic projects and networks in China, Europe and the Americas.

This lecture series will serve as main platform to foster and develop the academic partnerships between the Department of History (School of Humanities) at SJTU with international top academic institutions.

Summary of the lecture:
