Description

Description

This course introduces students to the greatest writers and masterpieces of Western literature from Antiquity to the age of the Enlightenment. To achieve this goal, it covers a variety of genres, including myth, epics, history, biography, essays, fiction, and poems, and proceeds chronologically from the origins of Western literature in the Ancient Mediterranean to the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Enlightenment. Students read the texts in English and study the most influential texts in the Western literary canon. In doing so, they examine how the concept of “West/Western” has evolved over time and how the definition of what constitutes “literature” was revised continually in the context of different periods and civilizations: Greco-Roman civilization, Judeo-Christian civilization, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and the Enlightenment. Students also consider that, while Western literature involves many different peoples and nations, there are interesting connections and continuities between the great authors and major national literatures within the Western world.
