Henk Vynckier开设的《西洋文学经典导读：古典到启蒙时期》从伊索寓言开始介绍西洋文学的起源，到荷马史诗、圆桌武士的传奇，以及《七日谈》、《坎特伯里故事》和《失乐园》序章等重要文学著作。为了深度介绍这些欧洲各地的文学经典，Vynckier以其比利时籍教授的语言优势，从英文、法文、德文的语言解释其文本和文人的历史渊源。而Vynckier又通晓中文，所以同时又可以使用中文解释艰涩难懂的关键文学概念。 本课程已在2018夏季小学期开设，有36名学生选课，每周会有小型写作练习，Vynckier会每周批改作业，并且指导学生英文写作技巧和报告技巧。 这是一门综合欧洲主要语言、文学和英文报告及写作的综合型课程，特别适合交大理工学生想要对西方文学经典有兴趣且极欲了解全盘样貌的通识课程。 This course introduces students to the greatest writers and masterpieces of Western literature from Antiquity to the age of the Enlightenment. To achieve this goal, it covers a variety of genres, including myth, epics, history, biography, essays, fiction, and poems, and proceeds chronologically from the origins of Western literature in the Ancient Mediterranean to the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Enlightenment. Students read the texts in English and study the most influential texts in the Western literary canon. In doing so, they examine how the concept of “West/Western” has evolved over time and how the definition of what constitutes “literature” was revised continually in the context of different periods and civilizations: Greco-Roman civilization, Judeo-Christian civilization, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and the Enlightenment. Students also consider that, while Western literature involves many different peoples and nations, there are interesting connections and continuities between the great authors and major national literatures within the Western world.
